How often should you update your website design?


The answer to this question depends on many factors, namely what type of website you have. If for example, you are a small builder working in a localised area it may not be necessary to update your design as quickly as if your website is an E-Commerce site selling IT equipment. The average life for most types of websites before a re-design is approximately 3 years.

At Guzzbury Studio, we don’t believe there is any generic timeframe whereby you must update your website design. Based in Taunton, website design is our passion, we love re-designing sites and adding a modern or updated spin to them.

There are various points at which you should seriously consider refreshing your website design:

  •  If your website is no longer generating leads and producing new clients as it once did. (Of course, this can be down to many factors, not just your design).
  • Feedback from visitors – sometimes users will give you feedback on how their experience on your website went. If you are receiving reports that it's difficult to use or that visitors can’t easily find what they want, then it would make sense to update your design.
  • If you have refreshed your branding to make it more modern, but not yet had your website re-designed, you definitely should press the button on a new design to keep your brand consistent.
  • If your current website is not built with a user-friendly back end meaning it’s not easy for you or anyone else in your company to update content, you need a re-development and likely a redesign too!
  • Likewise, if your site is not responsive, i.e. does not function correctly or is distorted when viewed on a mobile or tablet device.

It always helps to get some honest advice and feedback from someone outside your business or a web design company (like us!). When looking at your own website, your view can often be clouded by what you think is still a good working website.
